Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services Center

website design • social media management

Founded in 1995, the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services Center (DHHSC) is a small, non-profit organization with local offices located throughout Virginia. Their mission is to work toward improving the quality of life for the deaf, hard of hearing, deaf/blind and people with difficulty speaking, and to educate the general public about the needs of their communities.

They support and ensure that the deaf and hard of hearing community can experience as much accessibility as possible in their day-to-day lives, including sharing information about financial assistance for the purchase of hearing aids, educating the community about accessible businesses near them, and conducting free presentations for businesses or private organizations.

The Solution

5Points Creative (5PC) helped DHHSC upgrade their marketing efforts in three important areas. First, they gave them a comprehensive website that provided important information and answers to their stakeholders, supporters, and clients. The new website features elements the organization had at their disposal, plus updated graphics, a brand-new format, and a modern responsive design. The 5PC team worked with the Executive Director to ensure the new website reflected her passion and demonstrated the way DHHSC is filling significant gaps in western Virginia. Instead of directing people away from their site to find out information, they now had resources readily available on their site as well as the ability to update their site as needed.

Second, 5PC developed a consistent and reflective social media voice that has allowed DHHSC to connect with their audience as well as potential clients. Trusting the 5PC team to handle their social media has been a great help and one less thing for a very busy Executive Director to manage.

Third, 5PC has stepped in to help DHHSC tackle the many last minute but important marketing tasks that seem to happen often for a nonprofit organization. The creative team has helped DHHSC by designing invitations, business cards, signage, press releases, palm cards, and other marketing materials.

Results

  1. Increased website traffic, new users increased by 5.95% and engaged sessions increased by 19.5%. Direct traffic increased by 4.6%, organic search by 1.2%
  1. Developed a social media following, organic social increased by 46.2% and average engagement by 1.6%
  1. Saved valuable time for the Executive Director
“We do great work and support so many,” said Betti Thompson.  “We really wanted a website that was reflective of the work we do, put us in the best light, and helped our consumers to easily find what they need.  The site 5Points Creative built for us accomplishes all of those goals.”

Challenge:

DHHSC’s website created many challenges for the organization. The site was around 12 years old and lacked the navigation capabilities and modern design of today’s more tech savvy websites. This dated look did not accurately reflect the important work DHHSC was doing to keep the deaf and hard of hearing community connected with modern technology and hindered them from improving on the services they offered.

The organization also did not have a staff member that was solely dedicated to marketing. The Executive Director, Betti Thompson, was doing DHHSC’s marketing work as she was able, often after hours and not on a consistent schedule. Frequently, she simply wasn't able to get to this part of her work. She needed the help of a company that could take website updates off her plate, gain a firm handle on managing their social media, and complete light marketing duties.
